Ten years ago I spend a few days on Tory Island, a small island north of county Donegal, Ireland. Tory Island is a remote island with two villages, East town and West Town, and has about 250 inhabitants. Staying on this island was an experience that kept intriguing me, although I never had the chance to go back… After my divorce I couldn’t find the negatives from my trip anymore, I considered them lost forever. Until today! I found the negs on the bottom of a box full of stuff I wanted to throw out. Happy me! I started scanning immediately!
Here is a preview of the series, more to come!

I came across this beheaded Buddha statue on a shrine build in a huge tree during a trekking on the Shan Plateau. To me, this picture became very symbolic. Myanmar leaves a very dubious impression to many visitors. It is a very religious country, its people practice what should be the most peaceful religion on the planet, yet its government oppresses the people with an iron fist…

Looking through the window of my 5 dollar hotel, after waking up in a strange and busy city, after a hot night in a small room full of mosquitoes and a noisy gecko, with no electricity to power the air-conditioning, in a too small bed, on a mattress with a big hole in the middle, and thinking how wonderful life can be while travelling. It was a relatively cool, slightly foggy dawn and everyday life in Bago started to come alive in front of my eyes. People and pigeons… Motorcycles and trucks…

During my visit in Myanmar I stumbled upon a sign near the entrance of a military domain in the centre of the ancient capitol Mandalay. On the billboard I read the magical words: “People’s Desire”. The sign is located on a major intersection and every day thousands of people pass the sign without looking at it. Maybe because it is written in English and most Burmese hardly speak any English. The sign is definitely meant for the Western tourists on their way from the old Royal Palace to Mandalay Hill…
The message is clear:
* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views
* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and the progress of the nation
* Oppose Foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the state
* Crush all internal en external destructive elements as the common enemy
I wonder if this really is the desire of the Burmese people…
