Muslim Soldier
Last summer I took my kids to the Citadel of Dinant in the Belgian Ardennes. During the early weeks of World War one there was heavy fighting around and inside this military stronghold which protects and important bridgehead across the river Maas. The citadel on top of of a hill overlooking the river valley has been an important strategic point over many centuries and has been the scene of many battles throughout the ages.
When we visited the small Military graveyard near the entrance of the site I noticed a Muslim grave. It struck me that Muslim and Christians (as well as Jews and Hindus) fought side by side in the past… Now we all seem to be enemies… I posted this picture as a reminder…
The headstone reads: Ben Mohamed Tagele, Died for France 20-5-1940″
